Electric Car Batteries

Electric Car BatteriesElectric car batteries are available in many, many forms, with different costs and benefits for each form. Batteries commonly used in electric vehicle conversions are lead acid and lithium iron phosphate. Lead acid batteries come in two forms, flooded and sealed lead acid (SLA). Flooded batteries usually have higher capacity, though you can buy very large SLA batteries. They always have higher amperage capacities, however, and tend to provide a longer range than SLA. SLA batteries, however, are extremely durable and require no maintenance, while flooded lead acid batteries need to be topped off with water every few charge cycles. Flooded lead acid batteries are the cheapest batteries available for EV conversions, with SLA batteries a bit more expensive. Both types of lead acid batteries are extremely heavy, however, with pack weights ranging from 800 to 1600 pounds, and can only be recharged 300 to 500 times before needing to be replaced, and the amp-hour rating can be decreased by half under heavy amperage draw. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, on the other hand, have an energy density approximately six times higher than lead acid. This makes the batteries much lighter and more manageable, enabling your EV conversion to be faster and more agile. LFP batteries also are able to handle up to 3000 charge/discharge cycles with no memory effects. LFP batteries are much more expensive than lead acid batteries, but the cost is reduced substantially because the batteries can last up to ten times longer than lead acid. LFP batteries can have very high current capacity, but are also easily damaged since they will continue to release high current even if it is causing destruction of the cell.
